How To Make Your Own Fairy Costume
Fairies have always fascinated many people, but now the
fairy costume really managed to become one of the top ten
halloween costumes. The only problem with fairy costumes is
that they all end up looking the same, with a white little
dress and a pair of fake-looking white wings. It's no wonder
everyone wants to make their own fairy halloween costume! But
have no fear, because I've built my very own faerie wings
before and I will show you all the tips and tricks to ensure
that you'll have the most original faery costume at the party
or for your kids!
The trick to making the most amazing fairy costume is to
start with the wings. If you already know which dress you would
like to wear you can use your dress as a base to get
inspiration for your new pair of wings, or to make sure that
your wings will match your dress. If you already have a vision
for your wings, you can leave the outfit shopping and design
for later. Fairy wings usually look like the wings from a
butterfly, whereas angel wings look like those from a bird.
This is an important distinction because you don't want people
to mistake you for a colorful angel when you really just wanted
to be a cute pixie with wings.
Making Fairy Wings
Supplies:
-A metal coat hanger (one or two)
-A pair of white nylon stockings (to cover the wireframe of
your wings)
-Some fabric dye to color the stockings (or black stockings for
black wings)
-Scissors, glue, glitter, feathers, rhinestones, or any other
decorations you want
Making faerie wings can seem like a daunting task, but once you
read these steps you'll see that it can be as quick as
sprinkling pixie dust on your wing design. First untangle the
metal coat hanger and bend it into the shape of your wings. If
you want larger wings you might need to use two coat hangers.
You might want to get your father, older brother or friends to
help you out if you are having a hard time shaping the metal
into your ideal pair of wings. Next you need to dye the white
nylon stockings to your desired color.
After your stockings have dried and are your desired color,
it's time to put them onto your frames. usually you will use
the "feet" of the stocking around the circular part of the
wings and have the "waist" part of the stockings left over. I
suggest you cut this part off (if it is left over) and use it
to secure the wings onto your body on halloween night when you
assemble your costume. So after the stockings are in place, tie
it up and get decorating! Be creative, use a black marker to
make "Monarch butterfly" patterns, stick some pretty glitter,
add any other cool things you can think of.
Next you just need to find a dress or outfit that will match
your new and trendy looking fairy wings and you've got yourself
a hot new fairy costume!
